Frequently asked questions

Is this the official exam?

No. DroneTheoryPrep is a practice platform. You take the real exam with an examination body appointed by the authorities in your country. We do not issue certificates.

Are these the real exam questions?

No, and they can’t be: there is no official question bank. Every exam provider writes its own questions. Ours are our own, based on the official European learning objectives and the text of the regulation. So you practise the material, not a list of answers.

Which exam do I need?

That depends on your drone. For a drone with class label C1, C2, C3 or C4, or an older drone of 250 grams or more without a label, you need at least the A1/A3 exam. If you want to fly a C2 drone closer to people, A2 comes on top. For drones under 250 grams the EU does not require an exam. Read more about A1/A3 and A2.

How long is a drone certificate valid?

Five years. You can renew before it expires; after that you have to sit the exam again. See renewing your certificate.

Can I take the exam in another EU country?

The EU allows it, and the certificate is valid in all EASA countries. In practice countries handle this differently; the Dutch government, for example, says a test passed elsewhere can only lead to a certificate in that country. Check with the authority where you want to fly.

How do I know the questions are correct?

Every question belongs to an official learning objective. Questions about the rules refer to the article they are based on, with the date we last checked it. Every question is reviewed by a person before it goes online.

What if the rules change?

We review the European and national rules every quarter. Because every question is linked to an article, we can see straight away which questions a change affects. For example, there is a European proposal to require registration for drones from 100 grams; it is expected in 2028 at the earliest.

In which languages can I practise?

In English and Dutch. Other European languages will follow.

Can I practise on my phone?

Yes. DroneTheoryPrep works in the browser on your phone, tablet and computer. There is no app to install.
