The A2 exam
With the A2 certificate (officially: A2 CofC) you may fly a C2 drone closer to people. It is an additional exam of at least 30 questions, taken under supervision. You need 75% to pass.
What does A2 allow?
In subcategory A2 you fly a drone with class label C2. You do not fly over uninvolved people and you keep a horizontal distance of at least 30 metres. With the drone’s low-speed mode on, you may reduce this to at least 5 metres after assessing the situation yourself.
You measure that distance from the point on the ground directly below the drone, not from yourself. The European guidance to the rules adds a rule of thumb: the distance is at least as large as the height you fly at (the 1:1 rule). Exactly this kind of detail is where candidates lose points.

The order is fixed
- You first pass the A1/A3 exam.
- You do practical self-training under A3 conditions and declare that you have completed it.
- You pass the additional theory exam: at least 30 questions, 75% correct.

Where do you take the exam in the Netherlands?
With the same appointed examination bodies as for A1/A3, online under supervision or in person. Prices differ per provider: we saw roughly €99 to €250, often including training. On top of that comes a €10 RDW fee for the certificate.
How you practise for A2 here
- Practice questions for all three subjects, with an explanation for every answer.
- Separate practice with the rules for distance, height and speed.
- Mock exams of 30 questions with a 75% pass mark.
- An overview per subject and per reasoning error, so you know where you still lose points.
